The 1-Hour Excavations course is a mandatory component of the NYC DOB Site Safety Training (SST) curriculum, required for workers and supervisors under Local Law 196. It offers a high-level yet practical understanding of how to work safely in and around excavations, which are among the most dangerous environments on a construction site.
Participants will learn how to identify risks such as cave-ins, utility strikes, and equipment hazards, as well as how to follow established safety protocols and regulatory standards.
Topics Covered Include:
- Overview of excavation types and terminology
- Common hazards associated with trenches and excavations
- Protective systems: sloping, shoring, shielding
- Soil classification and stability factors
- Access, egress, and hazard communication requirements
- NYC DOB regulations and OSHA standards
This fully online, self-paced course equips students with the awareness needed to prevent serious injuries and fatalities on excavation-related tasks. It fulfills 1 hour of SST credit and includes a certificate of completion.
